T H E I R I S H B O U Z O U K I C H O R D C H A R T (for instruments tuned G,DAd) Version 2.5, by Han Speek, Mar 26, 2000 This is my second attempt at making a more-or-less complete list of chords for the Irish bouzouki. This list will give most common chord forms, and some not so common, for the GDAD tuning as favoured by most leading Irish bouzouki players. It is intended to enable anyone to accompany Irish tunes in most conventional keys. Some keys, like Ab and Eb have been left out on purpose, since hardly anyone I know plays in these keys without using a capo. While the original version of this list was limited to chords up to the 7th fret, I have now extended it to include chords up to the 12th fret. The fact that the bouzouki only has fours string pairs automatically eliminates most "funny" (jazz ?) chords. I myself eliminated these that would have been feasible on the instrument, since I think they don't really fit the instrument's accepted use (arguments, please ?), except maybe in song accompaniment. Chords are notated in tab form, lowest string left, highest right, one chord per line. I have also listed the notes actually played, in ABC(*) notation, and tried to name each form. Any corrections, additions or other comments are most welcome. Han. (email: hspeek@xs4all.nl) Revision History: Version 1.0 - First version available on the net. Version 1.1 - Changed table format to facilitate automatic conversion to PostScript(tm). Added Gmaj7. Added note with Donal Lunny riff. Version 1.2 - Added G/B, Dsus4, D/Asus4, also added a new D, and 2 notes on some riffs that employ these. Version 2.0 - Added chord forms higher up the neck, up to 12th fret. Version 2.1 - Added a few chord shapes I originally though not too useful, also corrected some chord names. Version 2.2 - Cleaned up some mistakes introduced by previous update, mostly misnamed chords. More chords added. Version 2.3 - Some further additions. Version 2.4 - Got a request for Eb chords, so I added some. Version 2.5 - Added a few maj7 chords. You still haven't got enough chords? Go off, practise !) *) The ABC notation is the music notation as used by Chris Walshaw's abc2mtex program. Info on this program (and the program itself) can be found at the ABC homepage: http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/. **) Based on this chord, try the following chord progression for the typical Donal Lunny sound: 0 5 5 0, 0 3 3 0, 0 2 3 0 The last two forms are not officially chords, but it's the sort of thing Donal would use. Play with it a bit, see what it sounds like. ***) The Dsus4 chords (added in version 1.2) work very nicely in progressions like 7 0 0 0, 7 4 0 0, 7 5 0 0, 7 4 0 0, 7 0 0 0, 7 4 0 0, 2 2 0 2. This can sometimes be substituted for a long phrase of just D chords (leading into an A chord here). +) The G/B chord in this form is typically used to "lead into" a C chord, like 0 5 2 0, 4 5 2 0, 5 5 3 0, 4 5 2 0, 0 5 2 0, 4 5 2 0, 2 0 0 0. Like the previous note, this can be used to "liven up" a long stretch of G chord (leading into D in the example given).
